"A complicated yet convincing story of good and evil that keeps the preaching to a minimum, the suspense to the extreme....Keenan masterfully keeps the focus on men and women under stress." Kirkus Reviews
Jack Cochran lived a life many envied but few understood. It began with tragedy. As a young boy living in the town of Duquesne, in the shadow of Pittsburgh’s giant steel mills, he was forced to kill his drunken father in order to save the life of someone he loved very much – his mother. But he overcame, blessed with three quintessential gifts that would carry him to fame – looks, brains, and superb athletic ability. As the University of Alabama’s star quarterback, he guided the Tide to a Sugar Bowl victory. It was his first taste of the spotlight, and he wanted more. The Vietnam War intervened and Jack “avoided” the draft by joining the U.S. Air Force, where he became an F-4 Phantom fighter pilot. His numerous missions in the flak filled skies over Vietnam earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, and several Air Medals.
After leaving the Air Force, Jack went to New York where an Alabama alumnus hooked him up with an agent. His great singing voice and handsome face soon landed him on Broadway. After a few years in New York an offer came from Hollywood and Jack Cochran was gone forever, replaced by John Coltrane – movie star. But dark and deadly secrets, secrets no man should have to live with, lay buried deep in his psyche, waiting to escape.
He receives unexpected news that would devastate most men. Hidden for years his secrets erupt in a multitude of devastating ways. The two great loves of his life; Doctor Riley Lane and the beautiful actress Mary Malone are both threatened with severe harm by these revelations. Nothing less than Jack’s physical and emotional survival is at stake.
He must now embark on the most dangerous mission of his life. On a cold December morning in 2005, Cochran finds himself facing two of the most dangerous adversaries on the planet. The first is one of the most violent terrorist organizations of all time. The other is a centuries old institution revered worldwide, financed by the billions that it keeps hidden in its own special bank, free from the scrutiny of any government. Jack must now use every bit of cunning, guile, and deception he learned practicing the actor’s craft and intertwine those skills with the tactics and killer instinct of a fighter pilot.
Phantom Fire is a gripping, fact-based thriller, full of intrigue, mystery, murder, and
in the end, great love. The book is a vivid in its fictional treatment of events that all to often play out the real world. Cochran learns in the unexpected outcome of the book that we often fail the most when we have succeeded entirely.

Phantom Fire edition by JR Keenan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
One of the best reads of the year.
This book has it all. It's a great mystery with War,Romance,Revenge, and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church.
Don't start reading this book late at night unless your an night owl, it's hard to put down.
Can't wait for next book by this author.
It is one thing to read about war, terrorism, the horrors of child abuse, and the utter corruption of institutions we once trusted. But it is quite another to have a ringside view of these events as they actually happen. A large part of the gambit of the human struggle unfolds right in front of you. We often see war through the eyes of movies like Top Gun, but in Phantom Fire you actually climb into the cockpit of a jet fighter and feel the full range of emotions the pilot goes through as he struggles in a fight to the death. We hear when sexual abuse takes place and we are all appalled by the reports. Yet it is quite something to actually see the circumstances of it and how the abused person is never the same. We see good, hard working, sincere Priests trying to live out their Christian calling only to be undermined by the incredible corruption of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. To top it all off, we get a look at the dark side of being a celebrity and how it can destroy relationships. All of these forces clash into a very surprising ending that left me on the edge of my seat.
This book is violent, yet set against the backdrop of a love story. It is about war, but war as seen from the inside out by those who actually fought it. It is about abuse, but the anecdotal approach taken to the subject makes it all the more horrible. Finally it is a mystery and a thriller in the sense that I could never quite see what was coming next and so many of the scenes could only be described as gut wrenching.
Definitely not a book for the squeamish, but if you are looking for a great read that keeps you enthralled and shows you life as it really was in the 1956 to 2010 time frame, Phantom Fire is a great read.
Read the "About the Author" blurb on John Keenan, and you'll see why he knows what he's writing about. Phantom Fire is a violent, fast-paced, tightly plotted novel in which Keenan unleashes a graphic portrayal of military action, Catholic hypocrisy, romance, revenge, redemption and reconciliation. Keenan's past as a playwright, director and actor is evident. Phantom Fire almost comes across as a succinctly imagined play or screenplay. Let's hope this former fighter pilot keeps writing. He needs the catharsis, and his readers need the excitement. Richard Judy, author of THRU An Appalachian Trail love Story.
This book has something for everyone. Phantom Fire is a mixture of politics, romance, military situations, religion, and the theater. Most of all it is a mystery with so many twists and turns it will keep you reading well into the night. I am looking forward to this author's next book!
Ps. would make a great movie!
